Food Chopping Knife
Russian Empire – USSR.
The knife consists of a massive, semicircular metal blade and a long wooden handle secured in a metal holder. The cutting edge has a characteristic curved profile that allowed the user to make rocking movements during operation. This construction provided an effective way of chopping food on a wooden board or in a special trough.
Chopping knives of this type were widely used for preparing fillings, cabbage for pickling, herbs, lard, and minced meat. Their simple construction, durability, and ease of use ensured their continued use both in domestic households and in public catering establishments.
This hand-held household implement was intended for chopping vegetables, herbs, meat, and other food products during meal preparation. Similar chopping knives were common in Ukrainian peasant and urban households before the widespread introduction of mechanical kitchen appliances. The object is a characteristic example of traditional kitchen equipment and reflects the practices of domestic food preparation in the first half of the 20th century.
