Antelope-Hunting Spear Scabbard
The scabbard was designed to protect and transport the spearhead of a hunting spear used for hunting antelopes and other large game. The object is made of crocodile leather, whose distinctive texture preserves the natural relief of the scales. The construction consists of three elongated conical compartments joined by a common rectangular section. Leather straps are attached to the scabbard for suspension and fastening to a belt or hunting equipment.
The use of crocodile leather was determined by its strength, durability, and resistance to moisture. Similar objects were widespread among the peoples of tropical Africa, where the skins of large reptiles served as valuable material for the manufacture of weapons, hunting equipment, and prestige objects. The multi-compartment form of the scabbard provided reliable protection for the spearhead and enabled the weapon to be carried safely while travelling.
