Stuffed Marbled Polecat (Vormela peregusna Güldenstädt, 1770)

Order: Carnivora.

Family: Mustelidae.

The stuffed Marbled Polecat represents a rare predatory mammal of the steppe fauna of Ukraine. The specimen displays characteristic features of the species: an elongated, flexible body, short limbs, a bushy tail, and distinctly variegated fur. The upperparts have a light-yellow ground with irregular brown and dark brown patches, while the head is marked with a contrasting pattern of light and dark areas characteristic of the species.

The animal is depicted in an alert natural posture. It stands on all four legs with its body and neck extended forwards. The head is slightly raised and turned to one side, creating the impression of attentive observation of its surroundings. The characteristic long bushy tail hangs down and curves slightly behind the body. This posture reflects the species’ characteristic caution, mobility, and readiness for rapid movement when searching for prey or detecting danger.

The Marbled Polecat inhabits steppes, semi-deserts, ravines, and open areas with abundant burrowing animals. It is primarily crepuscular and nocturnal. Its diet consists mainly of small rodents, ground squirrels, jerboas, birds, reptiles, and large insects. For shelter, it uses abandoned burrows of other animals or natural hiding places.

The museum specimen has scientific and educational value, illustrating the diversity of predatory mammals inhabiting steppe ecosystems and their role in regulating populations of small animals. The species is declining in many regions as a result of habitat loss and the agricultural and economic transformation of steppe landscapes.

Distribution: Southeastern Europe, Western and Central Asia.

Conservation status: Listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine.

Provenance: The specimen was prepared in Rostov and transferred to the museum in 1963.
