Sample of Sedimentary Rock — Loess
Poltava Huberniia, Kremenchuk District. Collected by the Expedition of V. V. Dokuchaiev, 1888–1889.
The sample of the sedimentary rock loess is housed in a square cardboard box with a glass cover. It was collected in Poltava Huberniia, Kremenchuk District, during the expedition of V. V. Dokuchaev in 1888–1889.
In the upper left corner of the box is a crossed-out inscription in violet ink, “5637”. In the upper right corner is the inscription “53”, also written in violet ink. In the centre beneath the glass is a handwritten label on a white strip of paper, bearing the inscription “62. Недогарскій шелюгъ лесъ” in a calligraphic hand.
The expeditions of Vasyl Dokuchaiev played a significant role in the development of genetic soil science. It was during his investigations of the Ukrainian chernozems that a number of fundamental principles concerning the origin and distribution of soils were formulated. The materials from his field journals became an important source for the development of agronomy, geography, and the natural sciences more broadly.
Provenance: Transferred to the museum following the work of the V. V. Dokuchaiev expedition.
