Cup

Chernyakhiv Culture. Dnipro Forest-Steppe Left Bank of Ukraine.

The cup has an even, pronounced rim that is slightly everted outward. It is separated from the body by a narrow-recessed band. The body is decorated with a complex pattern consisting of alternating vertical undecorated bands and bands filled with oblique rows of impressions made with a roulette stamp. The decorated bands are outlined by vertical lines of impressions made with the same roulette stamp. The base is convex, and the ornamental bands narrow towards the centre of the bottom.

The cup was made of clay on a potter’s wheel. Its exterior is black and burnished.

Decorated cups are characteristic products of the Chernyakhiv culture, which developed in the territory of present-day Ukraine under the influence of local and incoming ethnocultural traditions. The high quality of manufacture and refined decoration demonstrate the advanced level of pottery craftsmanship among the population of the Chernyakhiv culture and the widespread use of the potter’s wheel.

Provenance: The object was discovered during archaeological research at the Shyshaky cemetery of the Chernyakhiv culture, in the Dernova Dolyna locality, in 2014.
