In a picturesque corner of Poltava’s historic downtown stands a monumental building—the former Poltava Provincial Zemstvo building, now the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Local History Museum. Behind its magnificent facade lies the fascinating story of how a scholar’s private initiative—supported by progressive zemstvo members and developed by museum professionals with the help of generous patrons in the late 19th and throughout the 20th centuries—transformed the institution into one of the main repositories of cultural heritage in Left-Bank Ukraine.

Thanks to the painstaking work of many generations, the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Local History Museum is currently experiencing a new renaissance. Its collections comprise approximately 300,000 items—archaeological finds, ethnographic rarities, artifacts from the Old Rus’ and Cossack eras, weapons artifacts, numismatic and phaleristic collections, a collection of documents and photographs, as well as natural history collections, including a mammoth skeleton assembled from bones found in the Poltava region. It has remained a favorite among visitors for over 60 years.

Without a doubt, the building that houses the museum has become the “main exhibit” in its own right. Designed by the extraordinary artist Vasyl Krychevsky in the Ukrainian Art Nouveau style, with colorful tiles and majolica on the facade and murals by Serhiy Vasylkivsky and Mykola Samokysh inside, it is a true palace of arts and crafts.

Today’s Vasyl Krychevsky Museum in Poltava is not a static repository of antiquities, but a dynamic cultural hub.

Over 135 years of continuous operation, the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Regional Museum has navigated a complex path of challenges and triumphs: from the first collections of the local council and the construction of this masterpiece of Ukrainian Modernism, through the ideological trials of the 20th century and the ruins of World War II, to the challenges of the current martial law. The museum’s work never stops for a moment; it is a constant renewal, the eternal youth of one of Ukraine’s richest museum collections.
